The Retiring Chairman Reminisces
40 years ago, when the Squadron was about to disband, Squadron Commander Simon Baldwin, asked me if I would be Chairman of the Squadron Association that was about to form. Little did I know what was to follow!
It is not my intention to revisit history as I hand over the baton, but to express my gratitude to all of you who contributed to the success of the Association over the years. In particular, Henry Horscroft, your Secretary of 39 years, who was the ever present glue that held the Association together. Henry's contribution was immense. He started the Newsletter, Phil Leckenby has carried it on, magnificently, and taken it into the 21st century on the website. The newsletter's effectiveness in keeping the membership informed and involved is huge.
Then there were those of you who have served on the committee. Volunteers all, whose only thought was the good of the Association. With such help and goodwill all things are possible.
Most of all, there were you, the members. So many to start with; an equal number of WW11 and Vulcan veterans who were single minded in their enthusiasm and affection for the Squadron. Latterly, as WWII numbers fell, we acquired Associate Members who embraced the unique comradeship of those who had served on the Squadron.
Our membership has always been international and supported hugely by the ladies. The social life of the Squadron was always fully inclusive and so it has been with the Association. This aspect of our activity gave the Association much of its appeal.
Crucially,, there has always been the bond with our spiritual home, Waddington, and, for our Vulcan veterans, XM 607. The recent celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Black Buck and news of the major progress to the preservation of 607 gives that bond a strength which will nurture the Association in years to come and will now be in the safe hands of Simon and your Committee.
I want to thank you all for your friendship and support over the years. It has made the task of being Chairman so enjoyable and rewarding.
I look forward to seeing you at the next Reunion.
