Remembrance

From May until September 1943, 44 Squadron conducted operations from the airfield at Dunholme Lodge. Thereafter they were moved to RAF Spilsby, from where they flew until July 1945. Both airfields are long gone but there are Squadron memorials at each location. On 11th November 2021, Henry Horscroft, accompanied by the Editor, laid wreaths on behalf of the Association at RAF Dunholme Lodge and RAF Spilsby.

What was probably the last chapter in the history of RAF Spilsby took place on 9th June 2012, when a memorial was unveiled by fourteen Spilsby veterans. It was erected on the base of the fire tender shed and replaced a former memorial dedicated in 2001. The new memorial was built in Portland stone, from the same source as that used for the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park. The design is based on the Morse Code for the letter V - synonymous with ‘Victory’. The three dots and a dash were replicated in the opening bars of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

On the following Sunday a group of Association members met at RAF Waddington’s Memorial Garden to remember those who served on the Squadron. A piper played a lament prior to the observance of two minutes silence. Afterwards most of the group repaired to the Thorold Arms, Harmston, for lunch. We were pleased to welcome our Liaison Officer from RAF Waddington, Fg Off Gillian Talbot, as our guest. Once again, we are indebted to Air Commodore Simon and Sheila Baldwin for their hospitality in serving coffee at their home before moving off for lunch.
