No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron
Out of the DV Window
The above photograph shows 44 Squadron aircrew in front of a Vulcan B Mk 1A at RAF Waddington, with the Squadron hangar in the background. The CO, Wg Cdr M A D’Arcy, is seated centrally on the front row. I believe the picture was taken sometime in 1965. Unfortunately, I committed the cardinal sin of neglecting to make a note of all the names whilst I could still remember them and I am now scratching around trying to recall many of them. So if anyone can help identify the above individuals, I would be most grateful to hear from you. I suggest the easiest way to put names to faces would be to number individuals sequentially from left to right in three rows, front, centre and rear.
Reunion 11-13 May 2018
The committee met recently to discuss, among other things, arrangements for this year’s reunion, which will take place over the weekend 11 - 13 May 2018. By then construction work on the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) should have been completed and a visit there will feature on Saturday’s programme. The IBCC’s Chadwick Centre now has a conference facility, which we will use for our General Meeting on Saturday afternoon. The Meet and Greet will take place in the bar of the Officers’ Mess at RAF Waddington and Sunday’s service of remembrance will be held at Dunholme Lodge Farm. The outline programme of events appears below. Further details will appear here as soon as arrangements can be confirmed and, as in previous years, timings and transport schedules will be included in welcome packs for those attending.
Friday 11th May
The opening event, the Meet and Greet, will take place in the bar of the Officers’ Mess at RAF Waddington, starting at 7.30 pm.
Saturday 12th May
Saturday morning will be left free for members to pursue their own activities in and around Lincoln. After lunch transport will pick up members from their hotels and take them to the International Bomber Command Centre on Canwick Hill. The General Meeting will convene in the Chadwick Centre at 2.00 pm, after which members will have time to explore the site. Saturday’s events will conclude with the annual dinner in Waddington’s Officers’ Mess, 6.45 for 7.15 pm..
Sunday 13th May
On Sunday morning, transport will ferry members and guests from their hotels to Dunholme Lodge Farm for a memorial service at 11.00 am. We are hoping that the Participation Committee will look kindly on our request for a flypast by aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Such a request does depend heavily on other BBMF commitments that day and, of course, the prevailing weather. The concluding event will be lunch at the Carpenter’s Arms, High Street, Fiskerton, Lincoln, LN3 4HF.
Golf Match 2018
Ever-mindful of how busy everyone has become, here is another note for your diaries. Any member out there able and willing to wield a golf club, regardless of the degree of skill, please support the 2018 golf match. It will be held at Belton Park on 2nd May 2018, which is the Wednesday of the week preceding the 2018 Reunion. The popularity of this event grows year on year. Some say it is worth turning up for the pre-match social chit-chat and bacon butties alone, but there are other attractions: a spot of gentle exercise over 18 holes set in the pleasant surroundings of Belton Park, followed by a convivial lunch of pie, chips and peas in the clubhouse.
The organiser and tournament director is, as always, Kevin Lawry. Anyone wishing to play should contact Kevin at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Association still has copies of the Squadron’s Operational Record and Roll of Honour, The King’s Thunderbolts, and the special edition of the newsletter produced to mark the centenary last year. Both publications will be of interest to anyone associated with 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron and they can be purchased at favourably discounted prices directly from the Secretary. Copies will also be made available during events at the 2018 reunion in May.
